Background

Dr. Rafik was awarded a PhD degree from Loughborough University, UK in 1992. His research was on sonar signal processing and seabed mapping. During the period 1992-1997, Dr. Rafik continued researching in the sonar field at Loughborough and worked as Research Fellow on many projects funded by EPSRC, the British Defense Research Agency, European Union and the Scottish Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. In 1997, Dr. Rafik joined Cardiff Metropolitan University (CMU), UK as a Senior Lecturer and in 1999 he was promoted to the post of Director of Learning and Teaching and then, in 2004, to the post of Head of the School of Product and Engineering Design.

Key Skills

Dr Rafik won many grants and awarded the title of “Teaching Fellow” for his contribution to learning and teaching. Dr. Rafik also worked as an Institutional Auditor for the British Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for the Period 2003 – 2010. Following CMU’s academic restructuring in 2006, Dr. Rafik took the role of Associate Dean for Academic Development. His duties covered continual review and evaluation of CMU’s academic portfolio.

He also managed projects related to employers’ engagement and workforce development. In 2008, Dr. Rafik moved to the Middle East and took a new role as the Director of Continuing Education Centre at Fahad bin Sultan University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and continued his research in academic development, employer engagement and work-based learning.  In 2010, Dr. Rafik took the post of Pro Vice-Chancellor Learning and Teaching at the University of Kurdistan – Hewler  (UKH), Iraq and was responsible for all the academic affairs of the University. In 2014, Dr. Rafik took the role of the Dean of Global College of Engineering and Technology.

He was tasked with establishing the College based on international standards and with local vision. He managed to secure a franchising agreement with the University of the West of England, Bristol, UK.
