Independent specialist institutional review

AI Assessment Governance Review

Independent review of university AI assessment governance, human accountability, validity, fairness and student safeguards, with an evidence-based improvement roadmap.

Scope and context

How this review differs from existing SPECS AI support

This is a scoped consultancy evaluation of institutional evidence and controls, producing findings and a leadership improvement roadmap. The AI Quality Readiness Diagnostic examines wider institutional readiness; the AI and Assessment Integrity Workshop develops staff capability; the AI-Assisted Grading Governance Test workbook supports self-assessment; articles explain the issues. Those resources can inform a review but do not constitute its independent findings. The review does not certify an AI product, validate every assessment decision or replace institutional academic judgement. SPECS is an independent consultancy, not an accreditation authority. It is not endorsed by or acting on behalf of any regulator or accrediting body, and cannot guarantee accreditation, licensure, recognition or ranking outcomes.

The institutional challenge

Connect intention, implementation and evidence.

An AI policy alone does not demonstrate control over consequential assessment decisions. Leaders need evidence that staff retain qualified human judgement, assessment remains valid, student rights are protected and risks are monitored across the AI lifecycle.

Frequently asked questions

Clarify the engagement boundary before work begins.

What evidence is needed?

Depending on scope, evidence can include AI and assessment policies, approval minutes, system inventories, validation and fairness studies, assessment samples, human-review records, student information, appeals, data assessments and monitoring reports. Missing evidence is reported as a limitation or gap.

Is this a workshop, automated audit or certification?

No. It is an independent consultancy review based on an agreed evidence sample, interviews and professional evaluation. It produces findings and actions rather than an accreditation or product certification.

Who remains accountable?

The institution retains responsibility for academic standards, assessment decisions, student rights, data protection and implementation. Qualified human reviewers must have meaningful authority to challenge and override AI-supported judgements.
